Computers are very often attacked by more than a few viruses, spyware, trojans and various forms of malware. Do they often come into conflict with one another, making it more difficult for certain viruses or trojans to damage the computer or steal private information?

Yes, malware can conflict with other malware, but it is a rare occurrence. A conflict will generally cause one of the viruses to hide the other one from an antivirus program, or cause problems with system32 files (in Windows) but I have never heard of a case in which one virus caused another to function abnormally on the same operating system.
