My Windows Vista computer broke and I got my files backed up to a CD. I’m trying to get it to work on an XP computer, so I need to convert it from the Vista computer’sfile to a file my XP computer can use.

It’s not the operating system (XP vs. Vista). It’s the version of Word (200X vs. 2007). The operating system doesn’t give a hoot about what’s in the file.
Assuming you have an earlier version of Word on your XP machine, download and install the free Microsoft compatibility pack there. That will enable Word 200X to read and write .docx files.
Note that not all Word 2007 features will survive or be editable in the earlier Word.
Hope that helps.
PS: Don’t forget that Word won’t be able to edit the files directly from the CD. You have to copy them to the hard disk first.
More than likely it is an issue with having Microsoft Word 2003 on one computer and Microsoft Word 2007. A Microsoft Word 2003 document will end in “.doc” and a Microsoft 2007 document will end in “.docx”. You can view “.doc” files in both versions, but only 2007 can open “.docx” files.
Check you files extensions, if this is the case, simply convert the “.docx” file to “.doc” using either:

or download the conversion files for Microsoft Word itself here:

Regrads,
Word is word. If you have Word on both PC’s it will open on both the same way.
