A Microsoft Word 2003 document will end in ".doc" and a Microsoft 2007 document will end in ".docx". You can view ".doc" files in both versions, but only 2007 can open ".docx" files. It's the version of Word (200X vs. 2007). The operating system doesn't give a hoot about what's in the file. Assuming you have an earlier version of Word on your XP machine, download and install the free Microsoft compatibility pack there. That will enable Word 200X to read and write .docx files. Note that not all Word 2007 features will survive or be editable in the earlier Word. Hope that helps. PS: Don't forget that Word won't be able to edit the files directly from the CD.
