How Do I Prevent Spyware From Getting Onto My Computer?

Posted by admin 18 August, 2009

I already have spybot, which is great for removing it, and a pretty good virus scanner (AVG Free) but I have to keep removing spyware that has managed to lodge itself on my computer. I know how to get rid of it once it’s already there, but how do I keep the spyware from getting onto my computer at all? I scan it just about every day and lists of spyware keep showing up just from casual use, even only going on yahoo. Is there a way to stop this?

To do that, you should use an antispyware program that provides realtime protection, and preferably a firewall with an intrusion prevention component as well. My recommendations for freeware applications are:
firewall: (listed in order of preference)
Comodo (http://www.comodo.com ), or
PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall )
Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that’s very effective, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don’t get improperly blocked. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.
antivirus: (listed in order of preference)
Avira (http://www.free-av.com )
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com )
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com )
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.
antispyware: (listed in order of preference)
Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com ) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com )
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org ) for additional removal ability.

While AD-AWARE is free and removes POST-SPYWARE, which you already know how to remove, they also have a pay version called AD-WATCH that watches over your PC to prohibit spyware from even getting onto it.
Personally I use ZONE ALARM PRO (also not free). This one incorporates the power of the Zone Alarm firewall along with a great SPYWARE blocker/watcher. There have been a number of times when I’ve gone to websites and it popped up a message saying that the site was blocked because of spyware.
If your goal is to get something free, you might do a search in the downloads area of zdnet.com and maybe you’ll find what you need there.
Good luck.

I would go to Best Buy and talk to the folks in the “Geek Squad”. They probably know of a better virus protector. And since that is their specialty, they would be the best people to ask.

First remove the spybot. I don’t trust anything it. It probably lets spyware come through.

I would say, use Ad-Aware or Windows Defender to remove the spyware because there no best spyware remover.

Switch to another operating system that isn’t as pathetically insecure as Windows. You can either switch to Mac, or if you’re not made of money, try Linux. It’s free at http://www.ubuntu.com and loads of other places, and you can test it out from a CD without actually installing it or changing anything on your computer.
If you MUST use Windows, at least switch to the Firefox browser. It’s a lot less vulnerable to that sort of thing.

Yes there is,and presuming you want free there
is really only one contender and that is
spywareterminator which has full REALTIME
PROTECTION unlike spyware doctor.This will
compliment your real/time AVG to stop the nasties
getting on in the first place.
D/load from below and scroll to very bottom of page to <>d/l without web security guard as this
can be a shade fiddly, but you can add later if
you want to try it.
Hope this helps.

My guess is that your anti-spyware app is only detecting tracking cookies.
Cookies are just small .txt (text) files that by themselves cannot hurt your computer. Cookies are “set” by almost every web-site that you visit, on every visit. You can delete all your cookies today and by tomorrow you will have dozens again just be visiting web-sites.
Cookies do NOT slow down a computer, at least the first million or so that you might have on your computer!
They are not a virus or spyware, BUT some people consider “tracking” cookies to be an invasion of privacy.
Tracking cookies are usually “3rd party cookies” from advertising servers. They can track your movements around the web in order to deliver to you customized, targeted advertising.
It all depends on ones personal level of paranoia, whether one considers tracking cookies some kind of threat. Some anti-spyware programs do not even report tracking cookies as even a minor threat.
Children are about the only people that are always nervous about cookies. Because cookies are an easy way for Mommy and Daddy to find out exactly what their darling ‘lil b@$^@#d$ have been looking at on the web.
If you are using Internet Explorer for a browser, A simple change of a setting can let you permanently block all 3rd party (tracking) cookies. (Much easier then constantly removing them!) Go to tools > internet options > privacy > advanced > check-mark “override automatic cookie handling” > third party cookies > tick “block” > ok > ok.
Personally, If I happen to remember it, I will delete my cookies every 6 months or so :-)
Cookies are much ado about nothin’.

Common sense and safe browsing habits.
I would suggest you invest in a proper security suite that includes antivirus, antispyware, firewall, etc.. from a more reliable vendor (like mcafee, norton, etc). Then once you properly configure it you should take some time to learn how to use it (ie, how to properly respond to alerts).
Freeware solutions only get you so far.. and you have now found the end of that road. You get what you pay for.
Good Luck!

Turn off system restore by right clicking on my computer>properties>system restore tab>check “turn off system restore on all drives”>apply>OK. Hope that will work!
