Three options spring immediately to mind. Yahoo! Toolbar includes in it an antispyware tool. Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware has a 100% free version (including regular updates) that works remarkably well; the latest version of it is quite user-friendly. Spybot S&D (Search & Destroy) is also quite good, and is 100% free (also including regular updates).
Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D work best when used in conjunction with one another. You can have both installed and running on your system at the same time without any trouble.
