I am an IT perfessional and my home pc has the free home addition of AVG virus software and Spybot. I have never experienced any issue with it. With that said, none of them, whether free or you pay for are 100%, there are so many virus/spyware released. I have Norton and Macfee, both are resource hogs. So my suggestion would be AVG virus software and spybot.

Windows Defender works great for me, comes stock on Vista.
Otherwise some ISP’s provide a free anti-virus, spyware etc. program(EG: Shaw Secure). These work well, especially since most of the time they are made by a trusted company(EG: F-Secure)

I don’t know about free spyware, but I use Norton. It’s really worth the money. I’m not sure free spyware would be all that good anyway, and they might even turn out to be a scam that puts a virus on your computer.

AVG 8 free edition, is an anti virus and anti spyware program.

You can try “Antimalwarebytes” and “Superantispyware”.
Both of them are very good softwares for malwares and spywares issues.

If you have AT&T, McAfee with a good firewall is free. Google offers a free pack.. A trial free Spydoctor no firewall. I do not recommend the Norton.
