I need computer help.

Posted by admin 18 January, 2010 (6) Comment

I need some serious help here. Youtube images are scattered everywhere. For example, right now I have a british flag instead of the community tab, and a whole bunch more random crap. IDK what the hell this is, but it’s bad. Also, pogo.com games won’t load and pogo tells me it’s a java problem, so I think the two are connected. I’ve tried everything from uninstalling and installing java to messing around with advanced java options, and nothing works. HELP

The Heightened Need For Good Computer Security

Posted by admin 15 January, 2010 (0) Comment

Good computer safety practices are necessary for anyone who wishes to keep their computer in good working order, but for an at home worker who heavily relies on the computer it is essential. In fact not only their income and personal details are at risk, but those of every customer that they deal with as well.

There are many risks, some of which are more obvious than others, but they fall under two main categories; viruses and spy ware, both of which may be transmitted in various different ways, and serve differing purposes.

Viruses are likely to cause the most damage to the computer itself and many are picked up by the user selecting an action that allows their installation. One of the more common methods is via email, where an email from an unknown sender contains an attachment. Upon opening the attachment, the virus installs itself on your machine.

They may also find their way in through web pages and messenger services. The page you visit may ask for permission to launch a video, or install some kind of program for a function it claims to be necessary. The ActiveX controller is of particular concern here, since it has full access to your machine, and so anything installed via ActiveX has full control of and access to everything on your machine.

Viruses are self propagating and likely to use your machine to reproduce. However the real problem comes when the payload-that is, the thing it was designed to do, activates. It might simply take over some of the functions of your computer, but it might start deleting the files of the operating system. Once this gets bad enough, your machine will cease to function.

Whilst viruses hurt your computer, spy ware may hurt you personally. These programs are installed in similar ways to viruses, but instead of wreaking havoc on your machine they are designed to spy on your online activities, for one of several reasons.

Some may simply note where you are visiting and send that information back to a central server. Based on that information they send you pop up advertisements that they deem from the information they gathered on you to suit you, or the advertisements may be completely random. They may also try and redirect your browser page to something different than the URL you enter.

The most worrying use of spy ware is to steal your personal information. In this instance, it is your passwords, credit card, eWallet and merchant account numbers that they send back, or perhaps your address or the details of the customers you work with. This of course is the greatest of the risks, because it could lead to identity theft, or the theft of large sums of money from you or your customers.

These risks can be avoided by the use of an up to date anti-virus and anti-spy ware program, as well as safe practices. Avoid opening mail and under no circumstances open attachments from people you do not know or install software from sites you do not trust. When combined with regular virus and spy ware scans, these simple things can serve to keep you and your machine safe.

Why do you need computer security?

Posted by admin 3 January, 2010 (0) Comment

Computers are an inseparable part of our lives today, life that has increasingly become technology driven. Besides work, we use computers for communicating, banking, entertainment, research – just to name a few. Besides hardware, security of the new-age machines is threatened by malicious software, viruses, Trojans etc. all designed to cripple a system. Loss of computer security leads to corruption or loss of data, misuse or theft of information, identity theft and unauthorized use of client information, transmission of computer viruses that can affect third parties and can lead to potential liability, services interruptions, security breaches at vital government installations that can threaten national safety. For corporate houses, loss of computer security can make vital difference in acquiring new work and sustaining current projects.

These are strong reasons to computer support the need for installing computer security systems. The first important requirement is licensed Anti-virus software. There are over 50,000 known viruses and 200 new viruses are discovered every month. The easiest method for spreading viruses is by e-mail attachments or instant messaging messages. Viruses can be disguised as greeting cards, funny images, or video and audio file attachments. The computer needs to get updated with latest threats and that is possible only with original computer security software as it gets automatically updated every time the machine goes online.

The next important requirement is Firewall Software. This enhances computer security by controlling communications from it, prevents unwanted accesses and is capable of blocking outgoing and incoming IP addresses.

Often computer security is compromised due to spyware that enters a machine by deceiving the user or through some software loopholes. Sometimes the user is tricked into unknowingly installing it or it piggybacks on desirable software. Hence, spyware removing software is a must in the computer security system.

A pop-up blocker is another important element in securing computers. Malicious attackers are likely to use pop-up windows that are concealed as special offers to set up a malicious code on a computer.

Besides all these installations it is important to ensure correct practises to ensure computer security when accessing the Internet. Never download email attachments from unknown persons, do not share your banking details and passwords with unknown people, do not click on links inside emails, for financial transactions – type in the URL each time on your browser and take care when sharing flash drives. These are just some additional measure to ensure computer security. Always buy licensed, original Operating System Software and Anti Virus Software. While there are cyber laws to help track and punish breaches in computer security, its better to be safe rather than sorry!

The Need for Physical Computer Security

Posted by admin 30 December, 2009 (0) Comment

Imagine showing up to the office one morning to the chilling reality of having been a victim of theft. Laptop computers are missing, LCD monitors gone and, most disturbingly, the space where the file server is vastly empty. Not only are you faced with the loss of expensive and valuable equipment, but also the critical data you are accountable for has now been compromised. Theft of valuable and sensitive computer equipment can have extreme repercussions and costs to businesses, individuals, and the general public.

You hear it all the time but never imagine it will happen to you. Unfortunately, computer theft and tampering is real and occurs more often than most people realize. As technologies improve and computers become even more lightweight and mobile, the risk of theft and security intrusions also increases. Unsecured laptops and other computer equipment are easy targets for theft in any office or public environment. Whether it is a school, private office, airport or library, there is the potential for computer theft and tampering from both external and internal threats.

According to a 2006 study by the Ponemon Institute, there was an 81% increase in the number of computers reporting stolen laptops containing sensitive information. A survey conducted by the FBI in the same year reported that 47% of computer security professionals reported a laptop theft in the past twelve months. At the office of American International Group, a file server and several laptop computers were stolen and compromised the private data of over 970,000 potential customers. While traveling, an Equifax company laptop was stolen from an employee risking personal information including employee names and social security numbers.

Well, maybe this will only affect business travelers and high traffic office environments? Nope. Computer theft can happen anywhere from a presentation hall to your very own home. An ING US employee found this out when a company computer was stolen from their home exposing the personal identities of over 13,000 employees and retirees in the District of Columbia. Similarly, an employee of the Department of Veteran Affairs had a company laptop stolen from home compromising the personal information of 26.5 million US war veterans.

How do you protect yourself and your valuable equipment? Often it is just common sense, but there are many computer security solutions available to safeguard your equipment and data. At any computer workstation, a computer cable lock could be enough to prevent a laptop, printer, or monitor from being stolen. Computer security cables, computer locks, and laptop locks are all cost effective solutions that could easily deter a thief and motivate them to move on to other, easier targets. One major retailer in the US has already invested in new computer security locks throughout their chain to comply with PCI data security standards. For file servers and larger computer hardware, complete computer enclosures and computer lockers can also effectively secure equipment from theft and tampering.

It is better to ere on the side of caution and safeguard your computer equipment than risk losing everything. Thinking that computer theft will never happen to you only makes it harder to deal with if it ever does. By taking some time to consider computer security options, you protect your valuable equipment and the data within it.
